5 Growth Hormone Peptides & Why Sermorelin Is the One You Can Be Prescribed

Growth hormone peptides are sold everywhere online, but only a few have human trials and fewer still can be prescribed. Here are five of the most searched, what the FDA has said about each, and why sermorelin is the one a clinician can prescribe for adults.

Three carry FDA warnings. Ipamorelin, CJC-1295 and ibutamoren appear on FDA's compounding safety pages. Tesamorelin is FDA-approved, but only for HIV-related abdominal fat.

Growth hormone peptides at a glance

Growth hormone peptides do not contain growth hormone. They signal your pituitary gland to release more of its own, by copying either growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) or ghrelin, a second release signal. That is the appeal of HGH peptides: your body keeps its own rhythm instead of receiving a fixed dose.

Regulation is the problem: most names sold online were never approved, and the FDA has flagged several for safety. Arbor explains how sermorelin works in sermorelin peptide therapy explained.

Growth hormone peptides compared

Below, five growth hormone peptides and secretagogues are compared on what the FDA has said about each and what human trials measured.

  • Sermorelin — How it works: GHRH copy, injection; FDA status today: Approved 1997 as Geref, discontinued 2008 (not for safety), now compounded; Best human evidence: Small trials raised GH and IGF-1
  • Tesamorelin — How it works: GHRH copy, injection; FDA status today: FDA-approved for HIV-related abdominal fat only; Best human evidence: Two large RCTs for its approved use
  • Ipamorelin — How it works: Ghrelin copy, injection; FDA status today: On FDA's safety-risk list for 503B compounding; Best human evidence: One phase 2 trial, no benefit over placebo
  • CJC-1295 and ipamorelin — How it works: Long-acting GHRH copy plus ipamorelin; FDA status today: FDA has flagged serious adverse events with CJC-1295; Best human evidence: No published trial of the blend
  • Ibutamoren (MK-677) — How it works: Oral ghrelin mimic, not a peptide; FDA status today: On FDA's safety-risk list; Best human evidence: 2-year RCT raised lean mass, not strength

On tesamorelin vs sermorelin, both copy GHRH, but only tesamorelin holds a current FDA approval, and for a narrow use. On ipamorelin vs sermorelin, ipamorelin works through the ghrelin pathway and sits on FDA's safety-risk list. Arbor's sermorelin vs tesamorelin compared and sermorelin vs CJC-1295 go deeper.

Sermorelin vial
01

Sermorelin, the prescribable option

GHRH 1-29 copy, injection

29amino acids, the active part of GHRH

Sermorelin is the first 29 amino acids of GHRH, the shortest piece with the hormone's full activity. It prompts your pituitary to release growth hormone in its own pulses.

Where it wins

  • FDA-approved as Geref in 1997 for children with growth hormone deficiency
  • The FDA later found it was not withdrawn for safety or effectiveness
  • A sermorelin-type GHRH analog raised GH and IGF-1 in adults aged 55 to 71

What it costs you

  • Compounded sermorelin is not FDA-approved
  • Adult trials are small and decades old
  • Not approved for aging

The prescribable option

02

Tesamorelin for abdominal fat

GHRH copy, FDA-approved for one use

-18%visceral fat vs +2% on placebo, 26 weeks

Sold as Egrifta, tesamorelin is FDA-approved to reduce excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy.

Where it wins

  • Two placebo-controlled trials of about 400 patients each
  • Visceral fat fell 18% vs a 2% rise on placebo in the first trial
  • A regulated product

What it costs you

  • Approved only for HIV-related abdominal fat
  • Label says it is not for weight loss and is weight-neutral
  • Antibodies to tesamorelin were common in its trials

Approved, but narrow

03

Ipamorelin as a research peptide

Ghrelin copy, never approved

25.3 hvs 32.6 h on placebo, not significant

Ipamorelin copies ghrelin to trigger growth hormone release. Never approved for any use, it is described as a research peptide.

Where it wins

  • Well tolerated in a 114-patient hospital trial
  • Short-acting, which some prefer

What it costs you

  • No difference from placebo on the trial's endpoints
  • FDA cites a published report of serious adverse events including death with IV use
  • On FDA's safety-risk list for outsourcing facilities

Research chemical, not a treatment

04

CJC & ipamorelin blends

Long-acting GHRH copy plus ipamorelin

0published trials of the blend

The popular CJC 1295 ipamorelin blend pairs a long-acting GHRH copy with ipamorelin. Each part has limited human data, and the combination has none.

Where it wins

  • CJC-1295 raised GH 2 to 10 times for 6 days or more in two small 2006 trials
  • IGF-1 stayed raised for up to 28 days after repeat doses

What it costs you

  • FDA has identified serious adverse events with CJC-1295, including raised heart rate and a whole-body vasodilatory reaction
  • No published trial of the blend
  • Both parts carry FDA safety concerns

Two flagged parts, no blend data

05

Ibutamoren, an oral secretagogue

Oral ghrelin mimic, not a peptide

1.1 kglean mass gained vs 0.5 kg lost, 1 year

Ibutamoren, sold as MK 677 or MK-677, is a pill that mimics ghrelin. It is a small molecule, not a peptide, and the FDA lists it among compounding substances with significant safety risks.

Where it wins

  • A 2-year RCT in 65 adults aged 60 to 81 raised GH and IGF-1 to young-adult levels
  • Lean mass rose 1.1 kg vs a 0.5 kg loss on placebo

What it costs you

  • No gain in strength or function
  • Fasting glucose rose and insulin sensitivity fell
  • FDA cites a hip-fracture trial stopped early for a heart failure signal

Oral, but flagged by FDA

Why sermorelin is the one you can be prescribed

Tesamorelin can also be prescribed, but only for HIV-associated abdominal fat. Ipamorelin, CJC-1295 and ibutamoren sit on FDA's compounding safety pages. That leaves the sermorelin peptide as the option a licensed clinician can prescribe for adults, filled by a licensed U.S. pharmacy.

Is sermorelin FDA approved? Not today. The FDA approved it as Geref in 1997, the maker discontinued it in 2008, and a 2013 FDA determination found it was not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness. Compounded sermorelin is not FDA-approved.

Documented sermorelin benefits come from small studies. In one 16-week study of older adults, skin thickness increased and men gained lean mass. A 2006 commentary, sermorelin for adult growth hormone insufficiency, argues it suits adults better than growth hormone itself, but it is an opinion piece, not a trial. In a published review, flushing and pain at the injection site were the most common side effects.

Arbor sermorelin injections start at $99 a month, after a clinician reviews your health history and decides whether it is appropriate. The program supports your levels under clinician guidance rather than promising a specific result.

How to choose a growth hormone peptide

Start with what can be prescribed, then what has human data. That narrows a long online list to two, and only one is for general adult use.

  • Check FDA status first. Anything on FDA's safety-risk lists, or sold for research use only, is not a safe workaround.
  • Ask what the evidence measured. Raising IGF-1 is not the same as more strength, energy or a longer life.
  • Expect a clinician to screen you. Your history decides whether growth hormone signaling fits.

If sermorelin is prescribed, the routine matters as much as the peptide. See how to take sermorelin.

Trouble breathing, wheezing, or swelling of the face, eyes or tongue after an injection can be anaphylaxis and needs emergency care. For flushing or soreness where you inject, message your Arbor clinician before your next dose.

Frequently asked questions

What is sermorelin used for today? It was approved to treat growth hormone deficiency in children and to test pituitary function. Clinicians now prescribe compounded sermorelin to adults to support growth hormone signaling, which is not an FDA-approved use.

It raises growth hormone and IGF-1 in small human studies. Does sermorelin work for energy, body composition or aging? Large trials have not shown that, so treat it as support under supervision, not a proven treatment.

No. Sermorelin is a peptide, a chain of 29 amino acids, that signals your pituitary to release growth hormone. Is sermorelin a steroid in how it acts? No again. Like other growth hormone peptides, it supplies no hormone directly, and anabolic steroids are an unrelated class of drugs.
